Jason Yengkhom scripted a history when he won a gold medal at the ongoing 6th World Junior Wushu Championships 2016 at Burgas in Bulgaria. The championship which started on September 25th will continue till October 3rd 2016.
Son of Geetchandra and Memcha, Jason is a four times national champion and a silver medalist in wushu sanshou. He started his campaign well to become the first ever champion from India in the history of World Junior Wushu Championships in boy’s 52kg sanshou event.
Jason beat Hesron Kenedi Simangungsong of Indonesia by 2:0 and Mohamed Meslhih of Egypt by another margin of 2:0 in quarter final and semi final bouts respectively. The final bout was a contest against a strong contender Jun Yang of China. However, he was too quick and landed beautiful kicks and blows to his Chinese opponent and won the bout comfortably with 2:0 points.
In the championships, two other Manipuri girls won silver and bronze medals. Thoudam Malemnganbi won a silver medal in girl’s 52kg sanshou event while Roshibina Naorem won a bronze medal in girl’s 48kg sanshou event.
So far, all three medals, 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals of India have been won by wushu players of Manipur.
