Lawyers in Manipur Sunday raised their voice demanding immediate withdrawal of recently introduced rules that seek to check “unruly behaviour and unethical practices” by lawyers.
“We will go to New Delhi and protest there against the amendment of Advocate Act of 1961,” said A Jagit, spokesperson of Bar Council of Manipur (BCM) and All Bar Association of Manipur (ABAM) while addressing a news conference today at High Court of Manipur complex.
Lawyers across the country were demanding withdrawal of the amendments introduced in Advocates Act, 1961.
The spokesperson said that few provisions have been added to the existing Advocate Act 1961. According to a proposed amendment, if a lawyer loses a case, he or she would be liable to pay a sum of Rs three lakhs and expenses involve d in the case to the client, he added.
“It also allows the advocate from the foreign countries to practice in India. This is a violation of the rights of the lawyers of the country,” he added.
Advocates of Manipur will hold a signature campaign and will submit a memorandum to the governor of Manipur, Jagit said.
Report of the Law Commission will also be burnt in front of the complex of High Court of Manipur, he added.
Jagjit further said that if the Union government or authority concern failed to approve all the submitted terms on or before Many 1, 2017, the lawyers will leave for New Delhi on the very next day (May 2) carry out protest rally from Patiala High Court to Rajgath.
If the pertinent authority failed to give positive response despite the protest, the lawyers will launch a series of protest against the decision of Law Commission of India to make amendment to the Advocate Act of 1961, he added.
