THOUBAL, Apr 25: A young bachelor who was a teacher by profession was killed when a police personnel opened fire at a Thabal Chongba venue at Ukhongshang Mayai Leikai under Nongpok Sekmai police station at around 11.55 pm yesterday.
To protest the killing, an indefinite bandh on Imphal-Moreh highway has been imposed.
The victim identified as Kh Santosh (25) s/o Kh Ibohal of Thoubal Athokpam Awang Leikai taught at the Institute of Rural Education (IRE), Wangjing. He died at Thoubal district hospital after he was shot.
Taking strong exception to the killing, a large number of people blocked Imphal-Moreh highway at Thoubal Athok-pam this morning demanding exemplary punishment for the killer.
The accused has been identified as Constable (driver) Elangbam Rajesh (30) of Salungpham Mamang Leikai.
His house was set ablaze by an enraged mob belonging to Thoubal Athokpam this morning.
Meanwhile, the dead body of Kh Santosh has been deposited at JNIMS mortuary.
Some people were playing dice game at the Thabal Chongba venue when some police personnel clad in plain clothes came and asked people gathered to stop the gambling game. After sometime, the police personnel came back in police fatigue and tried to round up the gamblers.
However, it is said that Kh Santosh was just standing near the dice game and watching the Thabal Chongba.
