IMPHAL: Denouncing defection of six Congress MLAs to BJP, volunteers of Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) Friday burned effigies of the six defectors inside the Congress Bhawan complex, here at about 6.30 pm.
The Youth Congress volunteers led by its president Amir Hussain protested the defection of the six MLAs, who won the recent assembly elections on Congress ticket only to betray their party.
Earlier, police successfully stopped the youth volunteers from burning the effigies and took away the effigies. However, the Congress volunteers made six more effigies and consigned them to flame inside the MPCC complex by closing the gate.
Speaking to media persons, MPYC president Amir contended that the six MLAs, who defected to BJP, are persons bereft of political principles. Responding to a query on the youth wing’s stand over the series of defection lately, Amir said that they have been urging the MPCC
president to meet the party MLAs and take a resolute stand over the matter. However, he said, there is no reason to lose hope despite defection of six MLAs as long as the remaining MLAs remain united.
