Imphal, May 14 (DIPR) : Minister of Textiles, Commerce and Industries Thongam Biswajit stated that handloom and handicraft emporium will be opened very soon in every district of the State with an aim to attract more tourists.
The Minister was speaking at the reception ceremony cum opening of new bank account of weavers at Uchekon, Laikon Lampak.
The function was jointly organised by Department of Textiles,Commerce and Industry and Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles.
Minister Biswajit said that handloom and handicraft products of Manipur is well known over the country.
He also said that the spinning mill located at Loitang Khunou will be revived very soon.
“The Ministry of textiles is going to provide 70% subsidy for reviving the spinning mill as it is the only cotton mill in the entire North East India. The Central government will provide Rs 4 lakh worth solar power looms to the weavers of the State with an aim to increase their production as well as their income. In order to save time, delivery system of raw materials will be launched very soon in the State”, Bishwajit informed.
Handloom and handicraft are important because as they are main source of income for many people of Manipur. Opening of bank accounts will check transparency of any implementing agency, he added.
Project Manager (handloom), Imphal East P Meenakumari said it is necessary for the weavers to open bank account for applying various schemes under the Central Government.
Seikai Singsit, District Manager, UBI, Imphal East also highlighted the benefits of UPI (Unified Payment Interface APPS) during the programme.
