Threat to lawyer : Probe begins

Imphal, May 11 2017: Following registration of an FIR at Imphal police station in connection with reports about threat calls made by some militants to a Supreme Court lawyer who has been assisting the family of a victim who was shot dead in 2011, police have launched due investigation.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dr J Suresh Babu said that the State Government is deeply concerned with media reports about threat calls received by Supreme Court lawyer Utsav Singh Bains.

Speaking to media persons at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat this afternoon, Dr J Suresh Babu said that they talked with the particular lawyer this morning.

The Investigating Officer who would be investigating the threat calls too talked with the lawyer.

The telephone numbers through which the threat calls were made have been traced to Myanmar, he said.

Whereas the lawyer said that he informed the SP (CID) about the threat calls on March 28 this year, the SP(CID) maintained that they did not receive any such complaints from the Advocate.

Taking due note that the names of a few militant groups were used while making threat calls, the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) informed that the police investigation would cover this aspect.

The case would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) if the police investigation turns out to be unsatisfactory, Dr Suresh Babu added.

DGP LM Khaute who was also present at the press meet said that as informed by the , Chandigarh on May 10 about the lawyer’s visit to Imphal, State police provided security for the Supreme Court lawyer.

With one police officer of the rank of SDPO as the investigating officer, State police would investigate the case thoroughly, he added.
