Windstorm leaves a trail of destruction at Ukl village

Ukhrul, May 8 : At least 13 houses have been substantially damaged following a heavy windstorm at New Kharasom village under Jessami sub-division of Ukhrul district.
The windstorm blew away the roof, snapped electric wires, blew apart the structure of some houses, partially damaged the village Church and the newly constructed village stage while completely destroying the residential house of the Church Pastor.

Following the reports of the disaster, ADC Member from Jessami DCC Wezope A’ Lohe visited New Kharasom village today.

Interacting with the villagers, the DCC Member assured to extend all possible assistance to the villagers and provide relief materials. As preliminary assistance, the DCC Member handed some cash and rice to the members of the village authority for disbursal to the villagers.

According to the villagers, the windstorm struck the village at about 4.30 pm last Friday and though the gale lasted for only about 15 minutes it wreaked substantial damage. If the windstorm had lasted longer, the damage would have increased manifold even to the extent of uprooting the entire village, they opined.

Meanwhile, Jessami SDO Ngaitei visited the village to get detailed information about the loss and damages of the affected families. New Kharasom village is located at the extreme northern border area of Ukhrul and has of 30 households. It is located about 90 kilometres away from district headquarters.
