UKHRUL, Jun 8 : Despite the grand announcement by Chief Minister N Biren that women markets will be set up at all the hill district headquarters during his maiden visit to Ukhrul district headquarters in April this year, no progress has been made in the construction of the market place. Significantly the area for the market place has already been identified.

Addressing the media at the office of Tangkhul Leisak Long today, chairperson of the Zaoranao Sin-Shim Women Vendors’ Association (ZSSWVA), MY Onmila and secretary As Philachon today said that the womenfolk were happy when the Chief Minister announced that a market place for womenfolk will be set up at Ukhrul district headquarters setting aside Rs 10 crore for the same.

To make the market come up, women vendors vacated their respective spots which were dismantled for the new market shed to come up.

However construction work for the market shed has been halted for the past 2/3 weeks which is a direct affront on the womenfolk, they said. Supplementing the two women leaders of ZSSWVA, president of TLL, T Shaiza said that the present site has been approved and recommended for a market place in 2011, with the then three MLAs of Ukhrul district, Danny Shaiza (Ukhrul AC), Late Wungnaoshang Keishing (Phungyar AC) and Dr Khashim Ruivah (Chingai AC) approving the same.

Documents were also produced before the media.

T Shaiza said that the construction of the market shed is for the convenience of all, particularly the women vendors who feed their family by selling their wares.

Taking into consideration the importance of the proposed market shed and the halt in the construction work, ZSSWVA urged the authority concerned to do the needful and ensure that the construction work proceeds normally without any disturbance.
