ATSUM relaxes its chain of agitations ahead of tribal exchange programme

IMPHAL, Feb 22: All Tribal Students`™ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has decided to withhold its series of agitations against the state government for its failure to implement their long cherished demands for the welfare of tribal students of the state.
A press statement issued by Information and Publicicity secretary of the union stated that ATSUM, on account of the `Tribal Cultural Exchange Programme 2011` to be held at Ukhrul Headquarter from March 4 to 6 next month decided to withhold its series of agitation for the time being.
The statement further mentioned that, the union has has called a bandh in all hill districts on February 18 last demanding the framing of decades long pending Reservation Rules and its successive passage in the  State`™s Legilative Assembly, extension of  the service of contract basis teachers in the hills for one academic year, state`™s cabinet decision on posting of Sr. MCS officers as Executive Director, DRDA against central government guidelines, deprivation of  tribal in recruitments and promotions of various departments and permanent solution with regard to Academic Calendar.
The statement further reaffirmed that, in spite of representations and repeated  reminder and to the extend of  resorting to closure of all government institutions and lately calling a peaceful bandh in the hill districts, the  government far from stirring its conscience  has chosen to still remain a mute sepectator.
The statement mentioned that ATSUM with no hope on failure of no positive responses from the state government till today,  the union to fulfill its legitimate demands will resume its agitations after the Cultural Exchange Programme, taking extreme measures at its disposal.
Further,  ATSUM appeal to all sane citizen and tribals in particular to support and show solidarity in all possible ways until their legitimate demands are met and justice is being done to the tribals by the state government, the statement added.
