IMPHAL, May 7: The 48-hours general strike called by street vendors in demand for review of the cabinet decision banning street vendors in Khwairamband bazar failed to evoke much response on the first day today.There were no sign of the general strike as shops and business establishments remained open throughout the day in Imphal city though there were reports of closure of shops and business establishments in some outlaying markets of Imphal like Singjamei, Palace Gate, Uripok etc.Reports also said some street vendors came out to the streets in Uripok area this morning thereby disturbing traffic in the area.However, police arrived at the area and picked up seven street vendors who were trying to block the road.All the arrested street vendors were produced before the CJM Imphal and released later after payment of PR bond of Rs 1000 each.In the meantime, four street vendors picked up by the city police while trying to submit a reminder to the Governor yesterday were produced before CJM Imphal today. Of the four, two of them have been remanded to 15 days judicial custody while the other two have been released on bail. Mention may made that altogether 25 street vendors have already been sent to jail and the total number of street vendors sent to jail in connection with the current fiasco has reached 27 while 11 others have been granted bail.
