IMPHAL, Sept 5: As per the provisional report of Census 2011 released by the Directorate of Census Operations Manipur today, the total population of the state as on March 1, 2011 is estimated at 2,721,756 out of which 1,639,737 are male and 1,351,992 are female.
The provisional report entitled “Census of India, 2011: Provisional Population Totals Paper 2, Volume 1 of 2011 (Rural-Urban Distribution)” was released today by Y Thamkishore, director of Census Operations, Manipur in presence of Imphal East DC M Lakshmikumar and other officials at the conference hall of Directorate of Census Operations, Manipur located at Porompat, Imphal East.
In 2001, the total population of the state was 2,293,896 with literacy rate of 69.93 percent.
The report further mentioned that the state has witnessed higher growth rate of 18.65 percent during the last 10 years while the country’s growth rate is only 17.64 percent which leads to the total population of 1,210,193,422 out of which 623,724,248 are male and 586,469,174.
The population of the state in rural areas is estimated at 1,899,629 while urban population at 822,132. There is rapid increase in the urban population of the state.
The present sex ratio of the state is 987 as against 974 in 2001. However, the sex ratio in the age group of 0-6 years has witnessed sharp decline from 957 in 2001 to 934 in 2011.
The literacy rate of the state in 2011 is 79.85 percent as against 69.93 percent in 2001. The present male literacy rate is 86.49 percent as against 79.54 percent in 2001 while present female literacy rate is 73.17 percent as against 60.10 percent in 2011. There has been an increase of about 13 percent in the female literacy rate of the state.
The most populous district of Manipur is Imphal West with a population of 5,14,683 out of which 2,53,615 are male and 2,61,055 are female while the least populous district is Tamenglong with a population of 1,40,143 out of which 71,762 are male and 68,381 are female.
Amongst the nine districts of the state, Imphal West is at the top in terms of literacy rate with 86.70 percent while Tamenglong is at the bottom with 70.40 percent.
The population of Senapati is 3,54,972 out of which 1,83,081 are male and 1,71,891 are female while its literarcy rate is 75 percent.
Churachandpur stands at a population of 2,71,274 out of which 1,37,747 are male and 1,33,526 are female while its literacy rate is 84.29 percent.
The total population of Bishnupur is estimated at 2,40,363 out of which 1,20,180 are male while 1,20, 178 are female while the literacy rate is 76.35 percent.
The population of Thoubal is 4,20, 517 out of which 2,09,670 are male and 2,10,843 are female while its literacy rate is 76.66 percent.
The population of Imphal East is 4,52,661 out of which 2,25,126 are male and 2,27,531 are female while the literacy rate is 82.81 percent.
Ukhrul stands at a population of 1,83,115 out of which 94,013 are male and 89,102 are female while its literacy rate is 81.87 percent.
The population of Chandel is 1,44,028 out of which 74,543 are male and 69,485 are female while the literacy rate is 70. 85 percent.
Further, director Thamkishore stated that 2011 Census is the seventh of its kind after India’s independence. The final publication will be released next year after completion of scanning of census schedule data captured by Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) technology and processing, he added.
THE CENSUS 2011 SHOWS THERE IS SHARP DECLINE IN SEX RATIO OF AGE GROUPS 0-6 YEARS. THIS IS MATTER OF CONCERNED AND WORRIED. THE GOM NEEDS TO LOOK INTO MATTER AND SHOULD TAKE A SERIOUS NOTE ON IT.
