Zomi National Day to be observed on Feb 20

IMPHAL, Feb 14: The 64th state level Zomi Nam Ni (Zomi National Day) will be celebrated on February 20 at Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Imphal, which is being organized by the Zomi Nam Ni State Level Celebration Committee 2012.

Okram Ibobi Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, Gaikhangam, Manipur Congress Committee (MPCC) president and Phungjathang Tonsing, minister of power/horticulture and science and technology have kindly consented to grace the function as chief guest, functional president and chief host respectively, said secretary, Zomi Nam Ni Celebration Committee 2012 in a release today.

The Zomi Nam Ni is observed as a day to commemorate the end of colonialism and imperialism and to mark the liberation of Zoland from the alien rule, in other words, it signifies the installation of sovereignty, the release added.

The day is also celebrated by the Zomi in Manipur with a great zeal as an important cultural event where traditional dances are presented by all the tribes and various items such as Miss Zomi Pageant, Musical Nite, etc. are also organized on the day.

This year’s edition of Zomi Nam Ni Celebration Committee 2012 has chosen “Cultural Conformity” as its theme and decided to organize the main event at BOAT, the release added, saying this year’s Nam Ni celebrating the Zomi culture and heritage will strengthen communal harmony, peace, mutual understanding, and peaceful co-existence amongst all the communities in the State of Manipur.
