IMPHAL, March 17: The Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights in Manipur and the UN will be inviting UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions Christof Heyes to the state during his proposed India visit later this month.
According to a source, the UN Special Rapporteur will be India from March 19 till the end of the month and the Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights in Manipur and the UN will be inviting him to visit the state and take stock of the prevailing situation of the state.
The Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights in Manipur and the UN is seeking to elaborate the issue of suspected extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions in Manipur during the UN Special Rapporteur’s visit to the state, the source added.
Meanwhile, it may be added that the a team comprising of representatives of eighteen human rights organizations of the state met United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, Margaret Sekaggya on January 14 at Guwahati.
The team from the state had apprised her of the present lawlessness in the state and testimonies of victims whose basic rights have been violated, were shown to her.
Margaret Sekaggya had later on submitted a report to the UN on March 5 detailing on the human rights violations carried out in the state and recommended the repeal of AFSPA 1958 and other legislations such as the National Security Act, the Unlawful Activities Act from the state.
