IMPHAL, May 18: The Federation of All Tribal Youth Clubs, Manipur (FATYCM) on Friday threatened to stage various democratic agitations and economic blockade on the state Highways if the concerned authorities fail to fulfill its demands within five days.
This was stated by R Asing, president FATYCM during a press conference at the Manipur Press Club here. He said the Union government and Manipur government has failed to provide pre-matric scholarships to the state’s minority religious group for last several years.
He also said 28 out of 87 schools have not been given scholarships since 2009-10 without giving proper reason, leading the students to suffer while pursuing education. The scholarships are given under the ‘Merit cum Means Scholarship scheme.
Saying that the scheme is not relevant to the Minority and Other Backward Classes (MOBC), Asing alleged that the state government has shown partiality to the Christian minority of the state while it has treated the MOBC well.
The pending scholarships are for the students in five districts of the state and that the total number of students of the 28 schools is around 1000, he said, adding that such problem has come up as there is no transparency and non-maintenance of series in issuing scholarships.
A memorandum in this regard has been submitted to the Union minister, Minority Affairs and one copy each has also been submitted to the state MOBC minister and Director, Scheduled Caste, he informed.
The body will impose economic blockade on National Highways and other democratic form of agitations in case the government fails to fulfill the demands mentioned in the memorandum within five days, Asing threatened.
