TAMENGLONG, September 14 (Newmai News Network): The Zeliangrong Student`s Union, Tamenglong District (ZSU-TD) has threatened to impose indefinitely economic blockade of National Highway 37 if its long demand to improve roads in the district is not improved in 30 days-time and also fulfilment of its demand for allotment of a 5000 metric tonne capacity godown in the district headquarters.
Submitting an ultimatum to the Prime Minister of India seeking for taking up immediate action to locate the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown and to improve the road conditions in Tamenglong district, the ZSU-TD said for quite a long time the students body has been drawing the attention of Union Minister Dr MM Pallam Raju and several other Union Ministers on the matters but no one have come forth to address the sufferings of the people.
“It is needless to emphasis more about the dire necessity of locating the godown at Tamenglong district headquarters. Out of 4 sub-divisions of the district, Tamenglong district headquarters supplies all the essential commodities to the three sub-divisions viz. Tamenglong, Tamei and Tousem sub-division except Nungba sub-division which is linked by National Highway 37, ” claimed the students` body in the memorandum.
Exhorting on the condition of the state highways which passed through the district, ZSU-TD mentioned in the memorandum that the highways are needed to be widened immediately while adding that the Tamenglong-Tousem-Haflong Road (91.95 km) has never been completed despite construction of the same by the State PWD for the past 30 years.
The Zeliangrong students` body then pointed out that the said road would serve as the second but the shortest inter-state highway with Assam saying that Guwahati, the commercial centre of the North Eastern India can be brought much closer to the district and Imphal, the state capital which would also facilitate the entire population of Manipur for speedy economic development and future prosperity.
