IMPHAL, Sep 20: MC Mary Kom has made the state ecstatic with pride yet again by winning the Women’s boxing championship gold medal at Barbados on September 18. Wishes and praises have been pouring in for the tribal girl who is the first to achieve such success in the international arena.
The Governor of Manipur has conveyed his congratulations to Mary Kom on her winning the world title for an unprecedented fifth time. The Governor in his message stated that she has not only done Manipur and India proud but has also created a landmark in the world of women boxing. He also said that he hopes she will continue and bring more laurels to the state and wished her the best in her endeavors.
The Chief Minister of Manipur has announced a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs to MC Mary Kom on her winning the championship for the fifth time. Mary Kom who is a Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee achieved the rare feat of winning the fifth consecutive World Boxing title when she defeated Duta Seluta of Romania on September 18 during the Sixth World Women Boxing Championship held at Barbados, Bridgetown. The CM has also written a letter to congratulate her for defending the World title for the nation.
The Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress along with its chairman and the executive members have also congratulated Mary Kom on bringing great pride, honor and glory to the nation along with the Thadou Students’ Association, Chandel district who has expressed its heartfelt congratulations on her latest victory at Barbados, West Indies. They stated that the contribution of MC Mary Kom in the field of sports is great and has been imprinted with the ink of gold in the history of World Women Boxing and will never fade away in time to come and hope that she will bring home the highest title of the Olympic Games 2012 which will be held in England.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur which is the apex body of the Kuki tribes has congratulated Mary Kom on her gigantic achievement and has urged the Central government to heap accolades of the highest order on her so that everybody in the country will take notice of the super sports star of the country. They have also stated that it is sad that despite bringing in five gold medals, the star is yet to shine brightly among the people in the mainland, which has now become a common case with all the sports stars hailing from the North East region.
Agencies add: Manipur Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh has expressed `immense pleasure` and congratulated boxer Mary Kom on her winning the fifth women`s boxing title at Bridgetown (Barbados) on Sept. 18.
In a statement here on Sunday, Singh stated that it was a moment of supreme pride for the people of Manipur that despite all odds, Kom won the World championship consecutively for the fifth time.
Her feat would be recorded in golden letters in the annals of sports history of India and Manipur, he said.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that Kom would bring more laurels for the state and the nation in the future also.
Several social organisations in Manipur also congratulated Mary Kom on winning the championship.
The All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) and Ethno Heritage Council (EHC), a social organisation, said in separate statements that though Manipur was lacking in developmental fields, the state was going ahead in the field of sports.
They said several sports persons from the state had done very well in their respective fields at the international level and wished Mary Kom success in future also.
`We are proud of you Mary Kom,` the AMFA said adding that “We always pray to God for your success.
Mary Kom who has settled in Imphal hails from Churachandpur district of Manipur.
