IMPHAL, September 24: The XVII Manipur University Inter-College Literary Meet 2012 began today under the theme ‘Nationalism and Patriotism’ at the Centenary Hall of Manipur University in the presence of university academicians, scholars and students.
Speaking as the chief guest, Retired session judge C Upendra stated the need to inculcate the spirit of nationalism and patriotism to students. Students as a pillar of the society needs to understand what actually nationalism and patriotism is, said Upendra.
While appreciating the move made by organisers in selecting the topic, he said, the social situation today is because ‘somebody uses money and muscle power to achieve his personal whim’.
While encouraging youths to develop the spirit of nationalism and patriotism, the retired judge however cautioned the youths against fanaticism.
“While it is encouraging to learn the spirit of nationalism and patriotism, the misuse can ruin students and the societyâ€, added Upendra.
Dean of Students Prof Th Ratankumar said that a society without any feeling of nationalism and patriotism will never develop. Manipur is lacking too, lamented the professor.
It is because of these feelings that an individual wants to contribute for the society which led to development, added Ratankumar who is speaking as the guest of honour of the function.
Urging students to discard selfish attitude, Ratankumar said that unless we develop a mindset of public interest, holistic development will be impossible. “Everyone has a role to play in making our society betterâ€.
Speaking as the functional president of today’s function, N Milan spoke on how a new social system can be brought about.
He said, “Manipur needs a lot of social scientists and thinkers. These thinkers must be able to visualise our problems to the core and bring our own model to solve the crisis.â€
The meet was marked with recitation competition, singing and other literary items.
