IMPHAL, November 19: Senapati District consumer’s club today staged a sit-in-protest at Senapati Bazaar against corruption and siphoning off of PDS items for the month of August and September 2011, which were meant for three Assembly Segments of Senapati District.
The three assembly segments are 47 Karong A/C, 48 Mao A/C and 49 Tadubi A/C. The sit-in was attended by public leaders, district frontal organizations and all tribal Hohos.
Speaking at the sideline of the protest, D Maryna, president, Senapati District Consumers’ Club, said after a fact finding of the distribution system of PDS items in the district, it came to light that some department officials along with some agents have siphoned off the items, which was meant for the needy people of the three districts.
She further said that the department officials and agents have asked for forgiveness to them and also assured that they will never do it again.
But again some months later the department officials have promise to provide ration card to the locals but till today they have failed to provide it.
Demanding to provide the PDS items immediately to the public, she said that the Senapati Consumer Club will send a written representation to Ministry of Consumer Affair, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, to look into the distribution of PDS items in the districts and to take immediate action against the corrupt officials of the department and further will also asked for help from vigilance department to find out the truth, she added.
