IMPHAL, November 26: A team of media persons along with the jail SP, IK Muivah and jail officials visited the Sajiwa Central Jail to evaluate the progress on the reformation measures taken up for the prisoners in the Manipur central jail by the jail authority .
Several reformation measures have been taken up by the jail authority including installation of Gym facility, provision of Yoga course, special vocational courses, IGNOU special study centre and other indoors and out door games for correctional measures for the700 jail inmates who are lodge in the jail in different cases and UGs belonging to different groups.
The most successful of the measures has been the introduction of bodybuilding by installing a gym facility, donated by philanthropist RK Biswajit of Animal gym, said the Jail SP IK Muivah.
Another successful step taken up is the short term course of Yogathon by the art of living, Imphal chapter. Batches of about 70 jail inmates are taught yogathan by the instructor Roshni kumar Sharma in a week module format. It further aims to cover all 700 prisoners by conducting several courses in the coming months.
Speaking to the media persons, IK Muivah said that the prisoner are provided with IGNOU special study centre in the Sajiwa Central jail and in Imphal jail where the prisoner can take up various correspondence courses and the fee for admission, text book and examination fee have been made free and the pensioner can continue to have the same avail of facility even after they are out of jail he said
Muivah further said that smuggling of illegal banned items including mobile phones into the jail has drastically come down after adopting stringent method of three tier checking and all prison inmates’ visitors including prison official are thoroughly checked. This has led to arresting of 3 security personal of VDFs on two occasions for trying to smuggle the banned items in the prison in a last few month back he said
The jail inmates are also provided with the games facilities and are also provided recreational activities beside newspaper for the jail inmate.
And for the female jail inmate in Imphal jail they are given free vocational training for making detergent, Dish wash, incense sticks, cane stools, toys, embroidery and etc, he said.
SP also added that spiritual counselling are also been carried out by counsellors in the prisons. Various AIDs awareness programs and workshops have been carried out in the prison and regular assistance is also provided to the HIV affected inmates.
All the measures have been taken up under the initiatives of the ADGP, MK Das, assisted by the SP himself and other jail officials.
The efforts of the jail staff have been appreciated by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi and awarded two meritorious medals to the jail staff on the 15 august independent day celebration 2012.
