Manipuri ensemble`s 45 day acting workshop concludes

IMPHAL, December 8: The 45 day acting workshop cum production under the extension programme of National School of Drama, New Delhi concluded today at the JN Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal.

The concluding function was attended by National Theatre Studies, Imphal director Ibotombi Haorokcham, Theatre Centre, Manipur president Wareppa Naba and Manipur State Shumang Leela Council, Manipur president Ph Gunachandra Sharma as chief guest, president and guest of honour, respectively.

Founder and artistic director Manipuri Ensemble, Kshetrimayum Jugindro Singh in his key note address said, during the 45 days training, students are provided with the basic knowledge of acting.

The programme was attended by 30 student trainees out of which 12 were girls. Different art forms including martial arts, Nata Sankritan, Modern Indian Drama and others were taught during the programme, he said.

The National School Drama, New Delhi had also sent one of its pass out students for the programme, he continued.

The students of the workshop had enacted Shankar Sesh’s ‘Ek aur Dronacharya’ at the end of the closing function.

Ph Gunachandra Sharma said performing arts students should have an inner sense of his acts.

He urged the trainers to provide indept training to their students.

The 45 day workshop is just an elementary workshop”, Ibotombi Haorokcham said while indicating to the need for specific acting workshop on different fields.

“We are beginners and has remain only as beginners”, the NTS, Imphal director lamented.

Instead of copying or implicating the western style of acting, our state has a vast source of inspirational art forms like the Nata Sankritan, he said.

Competition amongst the different theatre groups will not bring any development, he said.

He ended his speech by expressing an opinion for the need of more specialized and specific trainings and workshops in the state.
