IMPHAL, December 12: Property worth around Rs 8 lakh including one lakh cash was gutted this afternoon when a major fire engulfed the first floor of a house at Mantripukhri under Heingang Police Station.
The house belongs to one Tez Prakash Ashikari, 38, son of Dilip Ram Adhikari of Mantripukhri Mercy Line.
The house is a double storey wooden building with five rooms on each floor. The ground floor is rented while the owner stays on the first floor.
According to family members, the fire broke out at around 1:30 pm and is suspected to have started from a candle, used for praying, on the first floor.
The water tankers of the fire tenders could not enter the narrow lane leading to the house and as such the fire service team was unable to effectively save the house.
Only a small jeep carrying water was used to extinguished the fire by the team.
The fire gutted beds, mattresses, cloths, refrigerator, television, steel almirah and cash of rupees one lakh, which were kept at the five rooms on the first floor of the house, said a family member.
NNN adds: A house belonging to one PS Lot who is the secretary of Lakhamai village of Purul sub division under Tadubi police station was engulfed by fire on Monday night, according to a delayed report.
The source said all the important documents including electoral rolls of the villagers, certificates and other village authority related important documents were consumed by fire. The property worth lost in the incident is estimated at Rs 15 lakh.
