Farmers union in agitation mode

IMPHAL, January 19: The Manipur Loumi Lup is all set to launch agitations from January 28 against the inaction of the government to look into the issues confronting the farmers of the state both in the valleys as well as the hills.

Speaking at a press meet at Irawat Bhawan, N Mangi leader of the Manipur Loumi Lup said the Agriculture Minister had announced that there could be cropping twice in the state with proper facilities, but the government has remained silent without taking up any steps.

Meanwhile, NNN adds: Former CPI MLA and Manipur Loumi Lup in charge N Mangi accused the state Government of not providing farmers’ benefits and also of non-implementation of various scheme and projects meant for them.

He alleged that the Government has not been competent enough to activate different multipurpose dam and barrages in the state and demanded to start operating these water sources after rejuvenation.

On the above demands, the Loumi Lup will launch a series of agitations after organsing a rally on January 28, Mangi announced.

Protest dharnas will be oraganised in every district and village in the state, he said.

Inspections will also be conducted on the dam and barrages on a regular basis and make a report on them to submit it in the form of a memorandum to the Prime Minister, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the Chief Minister and other concerned authorities, he said.
