IMPHAL, Aug 18: A magisterial enquiry has been set up to probe the alleged extra-judicial killing of six persons by Manipur police commandos at Awang Khunou Lamkhai along NH-53 on the night of September 8, 2009.
As per the notification from the additional district magistrate, Imphal West, the Government of Manipur vide order no. 2/1/(22)/2010-H (NHRC) dated July 7, 2010, and August 6, 2010 of the Home Department, Manipur, and No. DM (IW)/1/475/CON/NHRC/08 dated July 12, 2010 has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the incident of alleged extra-judicial killing of six persons, namely Ngasekpam Danny Singh alias Bodhe, aged 26 years, son of Ng. Achouba Singh of Sega Road Khwairakpam Leikai, Imphal West, Kshetrimayum Gobind Singh, aged 29 years, son of Ksh. Gouramani Singh of Keishamthong Hodam Leirak, Imphal West, Md. Tomba, aged 32 years, son of Md. Iboton of Mayang Imphal Konchak at present residing at Hatta Golapati, Imphal West, Akhongbam Oken Singh, aged 36 years, of Langol Ningthou Leimakhong, Imphal West, Md. Mujibur Rahaman, aged 38 years, son of Md. Ahamad Ali of Uchiwa, Wangbal, and Md. Ajagar Ali, aged 38 years, son of Mogbal Hussain of Borpetta Road, Assam.
It may be recalled that all six persons were killed by a combined security force of Imphal West CDO and 12 Maratha Light Infantry at Awang Khunou village on September 8, 2009 in an alleged fake encounter.
Subsequently, JACs were formed by the family members of the victims demanding justice and reparation. However, no visible actions were taken up by the state government at that time.
The magisterial enquiry for probing the incident came as a part of the demand of the JACs which had voiced against the killing of innocent people by security forces.
Meanwhile, another notification from the additional district magistrate, Imphal West, has called for persons interested in giving evidence before the magisterial enquiry in connection with the alleged extra-judicial killing of Ningombam Gopal, son of (L) N. Kulla of Heirangoithong Makha Mutum Leirak by Manipur Police Commandos and 32 Assam Rifles at an isolated place between Sadokpam and Heinoubok under Lamphel police station on December 23, 2008.
