IMPHAL, June 11: The Nongpok Ningthou Panthoibi Development Committee, Keirao Bitra has blocked the Imphal-Yairipok road for 48 hours starting from 4am today against the failure of the government to take maintenance work of roads in Keirao Bitra area.

During the blockade, effigies of MLA Karam Thamarjit Singh were set on fire by the locals, sloganeering that he is not a fit representative.

However, there were no reports of any untoward incident during the imposition of the blockade today which will continue till 4am of June 13.

Speaking to the media persons at the spot, president Thakhelambam Joy said that since the last 17-18 years there have been no maintenance work or repairing of the Keirao Bitra roads.

He said that the locals had taken the issue before the MLA and concerned Minister several times but there has been no positive response from the authorities till date.

He continued that on April 29 last, an indefinite blockade was imposed against the failure of the government to response to the demands of the people.

Meanwhile, Andro MLA, Th Shyamkumar visited and inspected the road despite being from a different constituency and provided assurance that he will construct the road at the earliest, he said and added that however work on the road stopped after the Water-bound macadam process.

The local people tried to meet local MLA Karam Thamarjit Singh several times but failed to get any appointment till now, he said.

The representative who was elected for the welfare of the local is now running and hiding from the local people, the protestors lamented.

The MLA is not taking any responsibility and remains deaf and dumb to the several agitations of the locals, they echoed against the MLA.

If the MLA continues to neglect the construction of the road then the locals will continue with different forms of agitation, he continued.
