Accused in auto driver killing arrested

IMPHAL, July 2: A man, believed to be the killer of the auto driver, whose dead body was found on June 30 from along the road connecting Khuman lampak sports complex to RAU ground has been arrested by the Imphal Police this morning around 9am after he surrendered to the police at 8am.

The man has been identified as Kshetrimayum Ibomcha, 50 son of Gukulsingh of Ttelouchana Mamang Laikai under Lamlai police station.

Speaking to the media person at his office Chamber N Modhunimai Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Imphal police station he said that the police had been investigating the suspected killing of the auto driver identified as L Deben (50), of Mantripukri Lamlongei, who was found dead with a head injury suspected to be hit by a hard object at around 10.30 am on June 30 under Imphal police station Imphal west.

On getting specific information about the identity of the suspect, a team of the Imphal Police raided his residence at Telouchana, this early morning, however the accused was found missing from his residence, the police officer said.

At which, the team picked up his family members for interrogation following which, the accused surrendered before the police this morning around 8am and confessed to murdering Deben for a personal enmity which has been between them for the past some months and had used the hammer found from near the dead body in killing Deben, he said.

Further saying that cooperation from the general public had enabled the police to arrest the accused in such a short period of time, he has further appealed to the JAC to dissolve its agitation and help the police in doing its duties in the future also.

Even though he has confessed to killing the Deben, the police is nonetheless interrogating him to ascertain whether he is speaking the truth, he said.

It may be mention that the JAC formed against the brutal killing of L Deben had called a 16 hour bandh along the national highway number 2 demanding the arrest of accused.

The Home Minister had also reportedly assured the JAC members to arrest the accused within 4 days-time.         

The dead body of the Auto driver has been claimed and taken by the family members and the JAC after the post mortem conducted at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences morgue conducted in the presence of a Magistrate with full video taping  of the post mortem.
