Van driver JAC extends bandh indefinitely

IMPHAL, August 23: The state wide bandh called by the JAC formed in connection with the killing of van driver O Gyanendro affected normal life in the state with all interstate passenger services remaining off the road.

The bandh was more effective in Singjamei area, the native place of the deceased van driver.

Bandh supporters since early morning, blocked all vehicular movement by burning tyres and placing stone boulders and other objects in the middle of the road along National Highway 2 (Imphal-Moreh Road) at Singjamei area. All shops, schools and colleges in Singjamei and surrounding areas remained closed for the day.

JAC supporters also set ablaze effigies of the state Chief Minister and Home Minister this evening at Singjamei area.

However, there were no reports of any untoward incident during the course of the bandh. Police personnel were seen deployed at various points to prevent any untoward incident during the course of the bandh.

The JAC had yesterday during a meeting held at Singjamei Community hall announced a 24 hour Manipur bandh but later in the evening shortened the bandh to just 13 hours.

Meanwhile, the JAC has further today announced that an indefinite Manipur bandh has been imposed after the end of the 13 hour bandh today. The bandh will be imposed until the culprits are arrested, the JAC informed.
