IMPHAL, October 20: News of an geological eruption occurring near CV Tuisom  village of Ukhrul district which is located near the Indo –Myanmar border was reported. According to sources, the eruption was said to have occurred at least near 2 km away from the habituated  area.

The incident was stated to have occurred during the past week on October 13. Sorces mentioned that a loud exlosion was heard by the villagers of CV Tuisom village. Reports stated that when villagers went to the site, mud spurting from the ground could be observed. The mud with high temperature was said to have decimated the nearby vegetation. Trees, shrubs and the general flora was said to have withered away due to the high intensity of the mud eruption.

Still, the mud flow is said to be continuing at the moment, and due to the geological upheaval, a road connecting Somra track is said to be impassable presently.

IFP on consulting geological experts voiced the opinion that the eruption may be a mud-volcano.   The term mud volcano or mud dome are used to refer to formations created by geo-excreted liquids and gases, although there are several different processes which may cause such activity. Hot water mixes with mud and surface deposits. Mud volcanoes are associated with subduction zones and about 700 have been identified. Temperatures are much lower in these processes than found at igneous volcanoes. The largest mud volcano structure, Indonesia`s Lusi, is 10 kilometres (6 mi) in diameter and reaches 700 metres (2,300 ft) in height.

About 86% of the gas released from these structures is methane, with much less carbon dioxide and nitrogen emitted. Ejected materials are often a slurry of fine solids suspended in liquids which may include water, which is frequently acidic or salty, and hydrocarbon fluids. Further, these mud volcanoes are reported widely in Asia. The report is yet to be totally substainted geologically and waiting for IFP reporter confirmation who is presently at the site.
