IMPHAL, February 22: The North East Students’ Organisation, NESO has submitted a memorandum to the Union Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde against the incidents of crimes against students from the North Eastern states in the national capital.
The memorandum while drawing the Union minister’s attention to the recent incidents of the death of Arunachal student, Nido Taniam, and others including molestations of women from Manipur and the rape of a minor girl from the same state which was followed by assault of two other boys from the state, it said although such incidents have been vehemently denounced by the government at different levels, North East communities continue to suffer shock and panic as unabated attack and assault continues against their communities.
“Despite the assurance given by Prime Minister office on November 15, 2009 that he has directed the concerned authorities to take stern action against the culprits and to take special measures for the physical security of the North East Students, crimes against the students from North East States continues.”
The memorandum further appealed to the minister for urgent intervention and to do the needful for effective measures.
NESO has also demanded capital punishment to the perpetrators of the heinous crime at the earliest; stringent action against the police personnel for failure to register case; inclusion of the North East – its geographical location, its people, its culture, its ethos etc. – in the syllabus of schools under all State Boards and Central Boards including the CBSE; at least one Special Police Station should be established for dealing with cases related to racial discrimination and atrocities on NE s people, with a provision that it is manned by police officers from NE states.
The memorandum has also demanded that out of thousands of police personnel recruited from Delhi Police, the Govt. of India should make one time recruitment policy for at least 5000 Delhi police personnel in the respective capitals of 8 NE states; enactment of a stringent law against racial discrimination as Anti-Racism Act.
