JIRIBAM, May 5: A fierce gun fight reportedly broke out between suspected Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) cadres and 27 Assam Rifles this afternoon at a village in Assam bordering Manipur.
Reliable sources said that the gun fight broke out around 12.30 pm at Chamtila Village in Cachar, Assam across the Jiri River.
Sources said the AR team has seized several weapons from the spot after the shoot-out.
Babukhal and Sabhughat villagers on hearing the heavy firings including loud noise suspected to be bombs for several hours left their villagers for safer places, it is learnt.
Meanwhile, sources have also informed that the security forces had picked up 34 villagers from Chamtil village for verification after the shoot-out.
Detail reports cannot be acquired till the filing of this report.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, militant suspects attacked a stone crushing plant of the Coastal Project Private Limited involved in the construction work of the railline at Nungba under Tamenglong District last night.
According to reliable sources, the incident occurred around 9 pm when militants numbering around 10 and well equipped with automatic weapons and lathod guns launched the attack from the hills side.
The stone crusher is located along the road side of the National Highway number 37 Imphal-Jiribam Road at Nungkao under Nungba Police Station.
The sources informed that heavy machineries of the stone crushing plant including some vehicles were damaged during attack. However there was no report of any human casualty.
The attack was believed to be carried out by a hill based militant group however the motive behind the incident could not be ascertained till the filing of this report.
