IMPHAL, August 8: We need a united voice to urge the central Government for implementation of Inner Line Permit system in Manipur. The State Government is serious about protecting the indigenous peoples of the State, and a united approached can only convince New Delhi.

This was stated by deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam while speaking to the media this evening at his quarter. He said expert advice and constructive suggestions are always welcomed by the Government regarding the ILP implementation in the State.

Gaikhangam maintained that the Union Home Minister in 2012 had written to the State on ILP. He said the Union Home Minister had conveyed that ILP system cannot be extended in Manipur. The then Chief Commissioner, Himmat Singh had removed the ILP system after Manipur got merged with the Union of India.

Further Gaikhangam expressed his regret over the police excesses on ILP agitators. At the same time he also defended the police, adding that the police are also Manipuris. It is their duty to maintain law and order, to prevent any untoward incident, he said. On the other hand, 20 police personnel of the State have been injured in the recent agitation, he informed.
