CM elaborates on need for proper awareness on cardiovascular diseases

IMPHAL, October 18: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today inaugurated the two-day 15th Annual Conference of the Cardiological Society of India `“ NE Chapter at the Conference Hall of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal today.

Speaking as the chief guest of the function, the Chief Minister said that a concerted effort of all the medical professionals especially the cardiologists in dissemination of correct information to the public on the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases is the need of the hour.

Today, cardiovascular diseases have become the most common cause of mortality and morbidity among non-communicable diseases, he said before adding that with changing lifestyle and lack of mobility, cardiovascular problems like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity and stress problems are increasing day by day.

Every year about 17 million people die of heart related diseases throughout the world, thus making it the most common disease causing death he added.

He said even though there is significant improvement in quality care of cardiovascular disease, unfortunately our North East States are far behind and yet to come at par with care and facilities available in other States. This calls for an urgent initiative from the cardiologists and medical professionals for devising a preventive strategy and programme suitable to health needs of the people, he also said.

Even though the State government is there to lend a helping hand in this endeavor, a major chunk of the responsibility should be shouldered by cardiologists and Cardiological Society of India in reducing deaths related to cardiovascular diseases, the Chief Minister said.

The inaugural function was presided over by Manipur Heart Care Society president Dr Ksh Kala Singh while JNIMS director Prof M Shyamo Singh and Cardiology Society of India NE Chapter president, Dr Banajit Chowdhury attended as guests of honour.

The conference was held at the conference hall of the hospital.

Dr. Banajit Chowdhury said that the annual cardiological conferences were started from the year 2000 at Shillong.

He also said that in India the percentage of Cardiologist is poor and we are still expecting that there will some super specialist of cardiology will came out in future.
