IMPHAL, October 19: `The role of a judge is not to earn a livelihood as it requires great sacrifices`™, Justice TS Thakur, a Supreme Court Judge, said while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural of the Eastern Zone judicial officers`™ conference in the Conference Hall of the High Court of Manipur.
The conference was jointly organised and hosted by High Court of Manipur and Manipur Judicial Academy with the theme `Justice Delivery Mechanism-Role of Judges`™.
The inaugural was graced by Justice Thakur and Justice Anil R Dave, also a Judge at the country`™s apex court, as the chief guest and president respectively.
Justice Thakur said Manipur is regarded as the `Jewel of India` and the judicial system of Manipur will contribute in making the State retained its title of `the Jewel of India`.
Indian judiciary is highly regarded which made even other advanced countries amazed at the way it functions, he said. However, some countries consider our judiciary system as slow, he added.
But he also emphasised that even if the Indian judiciary grinds slowly, it grinds well.
Elaborating that even if a lawyer is corrupt there are many ways and means with which the judicial system can tackle him, he said but if a judge becomes corrupt then not much can be done.
He also stated that a real judge derives true satisfaction from delivering the right judgment rather than his salary.
Urging the judges to refrain from selling their judgments and be honest in delivering judgments, he praised the highly advanced state of infrastructure of the Manipur High
Court and added that the Manipur High Court need not be expanded for the next 50 years.
The vote of thanks was delivered by High Court of Manipur judge, Justice N Kotishwar Singh.
