IMPHAL, January 7: Two underground cadres were reportedly killed in a fierce encounter with 44 Assam Rifles in a place between Bungpa Khunou and Rihang village in Ukhrul district on January 6 around 12.30 am.
The site of the gunfight lies 5 km south of Chassad Police Station under Kamjong Sub-Division.
According to sources, personnel of 44 AR posted at Chassad were patrolling when heavily armed UG cadres laid an ambush which the AR retaliated with heavy firing.
On searching the firing site, two dead bodies belonging to an underground outfit were recovered along with an AK-56 assault rifle and magazine containing 12 live rounds.
The sources said police have brought the dead bodies to the RIMS morgue for identification. Identity of one of the UG cadres has been established. He has been identified as Sinam Aboinao, 20 son of S Romesh of Thangmeiband Polem Leikai, Imphal West.
It is said that the other cadre may be from Thoubal district.
The dead body of S Aboinao has been handed over to his family members after performing post mortem examination at RIMS morgue. He had left his house for working in Ukhrul district a few years back but never returned, the sources said.
