UKHRUL, January 16: Educating the public on human rights laws is the key to check human right violation in a conflict zone like Manipur where such incidents are rampant, said TNL President V Weapon Zimik.
The TNL president was addressing a gathering during a book released function of Tangkhul-English bilingual booklet on Select Articles of International Human Rights Law and AFSPA published by Tangkhul Naga Long in collaboration with UNMM Ukhrul at TNL Hall on Saturday.
He said that human rights the cases of violation is more in remote areas especially against those who are illiterate or who cannot raise their voices adding that suggested to educate oneself to protect from perpetrators.
The TNL president claimed that the Nagas had faced untold human rights violation in the hands of security forces under guise of AFSPA, in the past but very few cases were exposed.
Lauding the UNMM initiative in bringing out the bilingual booklet for mass awareness among Tangkhul public, he exhorted the public to equip themselves with the booklet.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary UNMM Manipur, U Nobo Kishore highlighted several instances of human rights violation in varied ways and forms including those committed by the security forces in Manipur.
According to him, the justice system delivery system in the state has failed miserably.
In his welcome address, Able, member Translation Committee expressed serious concern over the gross rights violation scenario in the district.
He then narrated that the translated version of the booklet is a result of the two rounds of workshop on International Humanitarianism Law & Human Rights Law organized by UNMM Ukhrul in the district in recent years.
TNL General Secretary Nobert Khayi proposed the vote of thanks, while Thotchuila Convenor UNMM Ukhrul conducted the ceremony and former convenor Greenson Ruivah invoked the benediction.
