IMPHAL, Dec 10: In connection with the 8th International Fortnight Protesting Violence Against women, girls and children, Women Action for Development (WAD) and Maria Bienchy jointly organized a street corner meeting cum poster campaign at Willong Khullen, yesterday.
Willong Khullen is 36 km far from the Maram. The programme extended into some surrounding villages.
Poster campaigns were also held at Tungjoi, Chivii, Paomatak, Lia Khullen, Thonggam, Shungmai, Shungkhlung, Yang Khullen and Bandramai.
The street corner meeting was held at Willong Khullen community hall drawing an unexpectedly huge crowd from the village.
Speaking at the function secretary WAD M. Sobita said that the poster campaign and street corner meeting is for all citizen of the state who are facing crime against women and children.
WAD has come across a number of cases of human trafficking specially girls and housewife, she said.
Crime such as rape and killing, murder, molestation, kidnapping, dowry death, wife battering, sex-determination, girls child trafficking female feticide, eve-teasing etc. happen in the family as well as workplace she added.
Sobita further appealed to the villagers and all the peoples of the state to avoid such gender biases.
The Secretary of Maria Bienchy Social Care Ministry, Senapati District, Elizabeth briefing the media said a girl was rape in the Maram area and the case was solve under the customary law.
Elizabeth further mention that while street corner poster campaigned in the Senapati district was evidence of the cooperation of the villagers in fighting this evil.
The observation was also attended by Dr. Daya Longjam, Medical officer, accident and trauma centre, JNIMS, O.J. Meitei, Internal consultant United-NGOs Mission Manipur, Dr. Makhonmani Eminent Film Maker and Bina Pani, columnist.
International Fortnight Protesting violence against women generally is observed with effect from 25th November – 10 December since 1999 by the United Nations.
This wake up call links with the 3 sisters, Patria, Maria Teresa and Minerva Mirabel who were political activists in the Dominican Republic.
They were assassinated in a ‘car accident’ because of their involvement to overthrow the fascist government of Rafael Trujilo. The three sisters in short are known as “Mirabel sisters†that is the symbol of dignity and inspiration.
