IMPHAL, May 18: Troops of 12 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South), reportedly intercepted Ginseng weighing about 170 kilos worth over Rs 10 lakh on May 15 from Sita road junction Chandel district.
A statement issued by the PRO IGAR(S), stated that based on specific intelligence regarding ferrying of contraband items on National Highway 102, the AR troops launched operation in general area of Sita Road Junction of Chandel district (Manipur) and intercepted the Ginseng.
It said on midnight of May 14, the AR troops observed suspicious movement in the jungle adjoining NH- 102.
Immediately a patrolling party was alerted about the suspicious movement, it said adding that on seeing the Assam Rifles personnel coming towards them, the suspicious persons dropped the four bags and ran inside the jungle.
Taking advantage of darkness and thick vegetation, they (smuggler) managed to escape despite a chase, it said.
The recovered item has been handed over to the Range Forest, Tengnoupal Range, Government of Manipur at Imphal, it further said.
