AMSU submit memo to PM on highlight NE issues; NESO members to meet PM

IMPHAL, May 31: All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through Governor of Manipur V Shanmuganathan today highlighting the major issues affecting the northeast states and requiring prompt rectification.

Speaking to media persons at its office, AMSU’s secretary general Manjit Sarangthem said the union is a unit of North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), and during its executive meeting held on May 17 last in Guwahati it was resolved to send memorandums to the Prime Minister by each of the state units before May 31 highlighting the problems being faced in the region.

Manjit said a team of NESO that will have executive of AMSU as its members will be meeting Prime Minister and members of North East MP Forum to exert pressure on them for expedition of the process of implementation of ILPS in Manipur.

The 15-page memorandum highlighted eight issues of concern and common to all the people of the seven states, some more acute in certain states but affecting the overall inclusive growth, holistic and sustainable development of the region- its peoples, land, natural resources, environment, biodiversity, economic empowerment, culture and tradition.

The eight issues are education policy and human resource development; repeal of impunitive legislations and expedite the ongoing peace process for an early negotiated settlement; infiltration of illegal migrants refugee demand for a comprehensive policy thereof; economic and infrastructural development vis-a-vis the Look/Act East Policy; employment policy for North East; Indo-Bengal Land Swap Deal 2011, stapled Visa and Regional Passport office; settling of interstate boundary issues and special Constitutional status and separate time zone for NE region.

The NESO comprises of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students Federation (TSF), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) and All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), representing eight major students’ organisation of the seven northeast states.

The student associations will extend support to the ongoing ILPS movement and make a combined appeal to the Prime Minister to immediately take corrective actions on the long pending issues impacting the life, livelihood, culture, tradition and polity of the peoples of the region, Manjit said.
