Two-wheelers to roll out with helmets

IMPHAL, Jul 2: With a view to improve safety of two wheeler riders on roads, Transport Department has initiated a new measure under which all two-wheeler dealers have to sell helmets with every unit of two-wheeler vehicles.
According to statistics available with Transport Department, two road accidents occur every day and one person dies every two days in road accidents.
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has already asked the State Transport Department to instruct all two- wheeler dealers to sell helmets with every unit of two-wheeler.
Helmets sold with two-wheelers should be certified by BIS.
Applications submitted to the Transport Department for registration of vehicles (two-wheelers) should be accompanied by sale invoice of buying helmets.
Subsequent upon the Ministry’s instruction, top officials of the State Transport Department held a meeting and instructed all two-wheeler dealers to make helmets compulsory. After the dealers have stocked adequate number of helmets, the department would launch a drive against two-wheeler riders who do not wear helmets.
According to official records, there are around 2.10 lakh two-wheelers in the State.
