Imphal, Dec 11 : A one day people’s convention held on 9 Dec 2016, urged the Okram Ibobi Singh government and the Centre to get the ongoing economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC) lifted without further delay.
The convention, organised by the United Committee Manipur (UNC) slammed the Naga organisation terming it as “inhumane” and “without human face.”
The convention entrusted the UCM to take all possible steps to ensure that no blockade is imposed along the state’s supply lines in future.
Another resolution demanded deployment of highway protection force along Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Jiribam highways.
It also resolved to maintain communal harmony and safeguard integrity of the state.
Another resolution warned that if the state and central government fail to take necessary steps to clear the ongoing blockade the UCM will move the court for contempt of court proceedings against the state government.
Representatives of citizen organisations including Naga organisations shared their opinions and made suggestions on how to tackle with the ongoing economic blockades. Those who addressed the convention include Prim Vaiphei, president of All Manipur Christian Organisation, S. Haokip, president of Kuki Inpi Manipur and Lakpachui Siro, convener of Forum for Understanding Naga-India Conflict and Human Rights.
All those who addressed the gathering equally slammed state government and central government for not taking timely action against the blockade and also the UNC for “strangulating” the entire people of Manipur for achieving its political gain.
Some of the speakers suggested that the UCM should recruit volunteers to secure free vehicular traffic along the highways if the state government and the Centre fail to raise national highway protection force.
Many of the speakers urged the UNC to continue the blockade till the Christmas festival is over.
