By A Staff Reporter IMPHAL, Jan 23: Padmashree RK Jhalajit, renowned historian and scholar was honored as Icon of "Man with a Cycle" in Manipur today in the Cycle club launch function organized by cycle enthusiasts at the Maharaja Budhachandra College, Konung lampak, Imphal. Receiving the honor, RK Jhalajit encouraged all to adopt cycle for health, environment and family saving and lamented on finding no space for cycle in the present Imphal city development works. R.K Ranjan, former Registrar MU, U Nobokishore, NGO worker, Yambem Laba, former Member State Human Rights Commission, Babloo Loitongbam, human rights activist and Irengbam Arun, Editor Ereibak also shared concerns over the deteriorating environment and economic situation in the state and how developed and developing countries abroad have, by policy, adopted cycle for attending office and marketing. The function attended by about 50 concerned citizens including women belonging to different works of life unanimously formed The Manipur Cycle Club with an objective of reviving and popularizing cycle in Imphal city and towns in the state as the only means to address larger issues of health, economy, development and environment affecting all sections of society, locally and globally. Altogether, 50 members registered as the founding members of the Club to work together for changing negative mindsets of and lack of space for cycle in public space. Members included environmentalist, journalists, film makers, academicians, human rights activists, intellectuals and scholars. Among many decisions arrived after minute discussions the Club will campaign for creating cycle lane and parking space in Imphal city. An Ad-hoc committee, headed by Yambem Laba, former Member, State Human Rights Commission as the Convener and Deben Sharma, Peace worker as the Co-convener was formed to take follow up actions of organizing the Club and campaign activities.
