IMPHAL Feb 8: Spastic Society of Manipur appeals to the public to give through cooperation in enumerating the disabled persons of the state.
Speaking at a press conference held at Manipur press Club today, Secretary of the society Laishram Ricky stated that the census 2011 drive is an opportunity to find out the total number of disabled persons.
Stating that the family members of physically challenged persons try to hide them fearing stigmatization, the result is that only two out of ten people with disabilities were counted in census 2001. As the total number is not known , policy makers have a casual attitude in framing national policies for the disabled ,thus only 3% reservation for the disabled persons reflected in the present status. If the factual number is verified, then the verification will provide a help in creating policies which ill benefit the disabled persons, he said.
