IMPHAL March 18: The first ever annual sport meet for journalist of the state began today with a traditional torch rally which started from Manipur Press Club and concluded at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium.Organized by the All Manipur Working Journalist’s Union (AMWJU),the three day sports meet will see inter competetion among the various media houses of the state in both team and individual events.
The torch rally was flagged off by sports minister N Biren from Manipur Press Club and the partcipating journos including Editor of Sanaleipak ,A Mobi ran till Khuman Lampak, the rally was paticipated by two representatives from each media house based at Imphal.
AMWJU president Khogendra Khomdram and other sport journalists coducted traffic passage for the rallyists. On arrival at the main stadium, an impromptu football match was held between two teams and refereed by senior editors and journalists including special correspondent of the telegraph Khelen Thokchom.
After the match, Thongju MLA and president of Manipur Olympic Association, Bijoy Koijam greeted the participants of the rally. The MLA announced that he will donate an award annually for the journalists sports meet in the memory of his father, the award will carry a cash prize of Rs 5,000.
In his address, the MLA congratulated the journalists and AMWJU for taking up the initiative to hold the sports meet, stating that sports makes a person discliplined, physically and mentally sound. It is sports which makes the state proud in the national and international arena thus earning the title, ‘powerhouse of sports’. “ I am happy that the sports family has also expanded to the media, in future may there be many succesful sportpersons who can represent the state from the media fraternity”,he wished.
The 1st Journalist’s Sports Meet 2011 will host different field and track events including cricket, football, volleyball, shot put, javelin throw, races and indoor games like chess, table tennis, badminton and bridge card game.
