Police sensitization on human trafficking issue begins


IMPHAL, June 20: Amidst rising criticism from the general public against the insensitivity of the state police on issues relating to trafficking of children and women, a three-day district level training and awareness workshop on trafficking of women and children for the state police personnel was inaugurated by Sr. SP Imphal West, Clay Khongsai today at the conference hall of Imphal West district police headquarter.

Speaking at the inauguration of the workshop, the senior police official stated that the increasing report of human trafficking has become a relevant issue in the North Eastern states including Manipur with which need to sensitize the police department on the issue and help in tackling the issue.

He further stated that even though human trafficking is not a new issue, the involvement of human rights and the increasing trend of human trafficking in the state has only made it relevant for the state force to educate itself on the various laws and regulation that the state has enacted in order to fight the menace.

He further mentioned that human trafficking has sharply risen in the region including in the state in recent times even though it was earlier reported frequently along the Indo-Nepal border, and as such the police as a government law enforcing body has a tremendous role to play in controlling the issue.

Meanwhile, the formal training session of the programme was started with the presentation of papers on Human Trafficking, Magnitudes, Dimensions Emerging trends and challenges by N Herojit Meetei, MPS Addl. SP (L/O), Imphal West which was followed by the presentation of paper on the topic Trafficking of Women and Children by L Pishak Singh, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Bishnupur.

The training session today was participated by all sub-divisional level police officers OCs of different PS and outposts established within Imphal West district Police today and the same training programme will continue for three days at the conference hall of Imphal West Police station.
