IFCD actively working to redress flood woes at Lamphel


IMPHAL, Aug 25: The irrigation and flood control department (IFCD) has taken up all possible steps to ease the problems faced by the people residing in water logged areas of Lamphel for the last two months, stated IFCD minister N Biren while replying to a calling attention motion raised by the opposition leader Radha Binod Koijam in the Assembly House today.

Biren further stated that considering the grievances faced by the residents of Lamphel areas and disruption in normal functioning of major departments located at the Lamphel, the department has taken up timely measures to drain out the flood water to Nabul river through one and only maintained drainage system at Shamusang by installing eight water shed pumps including four deisel and four electrical water pumps since the first week of June.

IFCD minister further maintained that due to the lack of irregular power supply the electrical pumps installed at Lamphel area could not be operated in full swing. However, the state government maintains dedicated power line and even 25 KV transformers at the operating site at present.

He also mentioned that the state government has also taken survey to make another two alternative new drainage systems which will be activated soon as per need of the situation.

In the meantime, opposition leader Radhabinod Koijam stated that the entire inhabitants of Lamphel have been suffering due to prolonged inundation.

He also drew the attention of the IFCD minister to take up immediate measures to drain out the inundated waters from Lamphel area and provide health care facilities for the public which have been exposed to the calamities.
