Missing UNACCO student found, left school to become trucker

IMPHAL, Aug 16: Robinson’s parents might have desired him to become a doctor or engineer, but this 14-year-old boy of sixth standard of UNACCO School deserted the school’s hostel to pursue his long cherished dream of becoming a highway trucker.

Khwairakpam Robinson is the son of a truck owner cum driver Deben of Kanto Khullen under Sekmai Police Station.

He went missing from the hostel of UNACCO School, Khongman Zone-III since July 31 and was rescued from Dimapur by the school authority yesterday. He was brought back to Imphal and handed over to his parents by the school authority in a function held today at the school premises in presence of members of local clubs of Kanto Khullen, students’ organizations and parents’ association of UNACCO School.

According to a truck driver named Shantikumar, Robinson came to a service station in Imphal where some trucks including the one driven by him were refueling before heading for Guwahati on July 31. He came along with one driver up to Guwahati without saying anything. However, they were stranded at Dimapur on their return journey to Imphal for many days due to the economic blockade.

He said that they did not get any information about the missing boy due to the blockade. He tried to contact his friends from Manipur to ascertain the identity of the boy. He finally contacted the officials of UNACCO after some days and entrusted to him the safe custody of the boy, the driver stated.

Addressing the gathering at the handing over ceremony, chairman of UNACCO School, N Irabanta stated that the boy was rescued from Dimapur by three teams sent by the school authority from Jorhat, Guwahati and Imphal. The school management committee left no stone unturned to trace the missing student. However, some misunderstanding erupted between the management committee and the family members. The UNACCO Microfinance which is not related with the UNACCO School had to cease operation at Kanto Khullen due to the intervention of the local clubs.

He clarified that the school authority had timely informed the family members and filed a missing report with the police. There was no laxity on the part of the school authority to trace the missing boy. The authority regretted for the misunderstanding that led to the detention of two UNACCO officials by the locals of Kanto Khullen, Irabanta asserted.

He further stated that the warden and security guard of the hostel have been suspended and an inquiry in underway to probe the case. The management committee would have thorough discussion on Robinson’s case and decide if he would be allowed to continue his studies in the school or not.

Robinson was handed to the family members after signing an agreement between the school authority and the parents.
