Police fires tear gas shells to disperse mob at Hatta

IMPHAL, December 18: Residents of Hatta Golapati this morning at around 11am took out a mass silent protest rally from new Hatta Social Welfare Union ground at Minuthong upto Checkon crossing and back to the union ground, in protest against the brutal killing of minor girl Abibi (name changed) after suspected rape yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, early in the morning today at around 8:30am, the residents of locality thronged Dr Razzak’s residence, who is stated to be the owner of the building where the crime had taken place.

The mob further tried to break open the gates of Dr Razzak’s residential gate at Hatta, when he failed to come out, however, timely intervention by the Imphal east police stopped the mob from doing any damage.

The police also fired several rounds of teargas shells to disperse the mob from the area.

The locals later on at around 10:30am re-gathered in front of the Hatta Social Welfare Union building and convened a brief public meeting. During the meeting, the locals formed a JAC against the crime and further decried the act as demonic.

The locals took out the silent protest rally after the meeting and further staged a sit-in-protest in front of the building from where the girl was allegedly thrown out.

Considering the tension brewing up in the area, Imphal east police remained scattered around the area.
