R-Day function toned down

A contingent of state police during the full dress rehearsal for the upcoming Republic Day celebration on Monday.

IMPHAL, Jan 23: The Republic day observation state function to be marked by the Government of Manipur this year will not feature the usual competitions for various categories, according to a source. The change in the observation this year is due to the model code of conduct in view of the forthcoming 10th State Assembly elections. The source added that 29 police personnel will be awarded medals at the function which will be held at Kangla.

The source added that the Governor of Manipur, Shri Gurbacharan Jagat Singh will confer 23 police gallantry awards, 2 Presidents’ Police Medal for distinguished service and 4 police medal for meritorious service. Faumai Gonglin, MPS and CO of 5th IRB will be the Parade Commander for the Republic Day function while H. Gyaneshore Singh MPS and Asst. CO of 1st MR will be the Guard of Honor. The source further added that though there will be no competitions this year, contingents from Assam Riffles, CRPF, BSF, MR, Home Guard, Civil Defence, NCC and 6 contingents from government colleges, 5 contingents from government high schools, 2 contingents from National Sports Academy Thang-Ta, 3 contingents of cultural troupes and 5 tableaus from MGNRES, Horticulture, TB Cell, Power Departmnt, IT, MANIREDA, NRHM and IPCD are taking part.
