Major Khathing`s birth centenary

IMPHAL, Feb 26: Assam Rifles will commemorate the birth centenary of Major Ralengnao (Bob) Khathing by paying tribute at a function at his memorial on February 28. In his birthplace, Ukhrul, the Major Khathing memorial football tournament will be organised, which will be elevated to a state-level tournament from next year. In addition, his contribution in nation building and efforts for lasting peace in the north-eastern region will be highlighted through a seminar scheduled on March 15, stated a press note issued by the paramilitary.

The note added that Major Khathing excelled in both peace and war and was a man of eternal qualities of soldiers for whom noting was impossible. Commissioned into the 19th Hyderabad regiment in May 1941, he had General Thimmaya and General TN Raina as his colleague. His association with Assam Rifles started when he was locally promoted as captain and was under the command of Major E Murray of 4 AR as part of V Forces which had volunteers from Assam Rifles. He was awarded the Major Cross for showing great character and leadership when he killed 120 Japanese soldiers in Ukhrul area.

The note added, his bond with the Assam Rifles was further strengthened when he joined the 2 AR as an assistant commandant at Sadiya. One of his greatest contributions was raising the tri-colour at Tawang in the company of 5 AR unit. For this admirable effort he was awarded the Padma Shree.
