IMPHAL, April 26: A mass rally took out in Bishnupur Bazar today under the aegis of JACs against the gangrape of Zangthaliu Kamei and brutal killing of Keisham Premila to protest crimes against women and children in the state.
A public meeting was also held at Thanil village, Bishnupur district during which many women leaders expressed concern on the increase of crimes against women and children in Manipur.
The recent rape of Zangthaliu and murder of Premila should be expedited to deliver justice by punishing the accused.
Momon, president, Chingmee Tammi Welfare Association while speaking during the public meeting said, an end to such heinous crimes against women could be brought about only with the support of the public.
Momon also lamented that the state government is still mum on the two rape cases even though a series of memorandums have been submitted.
She further accused the government of creating grounds which could help rapists to repeat such crimes and said the culprits should not be spared and that they should be awarded death sentences.
The mass rally, which started at 11:30 am from Bishnupur Bazaar went to the Bishnupur Deputy Commissioner Complex and the office of the district Superintendent of Police before gathering at Thanil village where a public meeting was held.
The mass rally cum public meeting was participated by various civil bodies, including Zeliangrong Union, South Zone, Rongmei Pui Fom and Zeliangrong Students’ Union.
Zangthaliu, 42, a housewife from Khupan Lungli village of Tamenglong district was allegedly gangraped by four persons including two IRB personnel on the intervening night of March 21 and 22 near Kakyai Primary School in Irom Meijrao.
In another incident, Keisham Pemila, 45, a resident of Wabgai Thingel Leikai in Kakching of Thoubal district was allegedly murdered after being raped by Mayanlambam Amujao, 35, of Kakching Turel Wangma Ningthou Pareng on Marcy 25 last atop Kakching Mahadev hillock.
