IRB firing injures woman

IMPHAL, May 29: A rifleman of the 2nd IRB fired several rounds in a crowded area near Chingmeirong Khongnang Ani Karak and caused injury to a woman.

The incident occurred today at around 10:55 am. Eyewitness of the incident informed that three IRB personnel were sitting near a pan dukan located at Yenkhoiba Bazar on the western side of the traffic round about.

Echan, 31, who was with her aunt Thokchom Mina, 35 wife of Naba, a resident of the area were buying pan from a shop a few metres from where the IRB personal were posted.

The two further recounted that one IRB personnel seemed to be in an inebriated state and moments later fired several rounds from his service INSAS rifle without any reason.

The bullet ricocheted from the adjacent concrete wall striking T Mina in the left ankle. She was rushed to RIMS hospital for treatment. Later, she was referred to Shija Hospital.

Meanwhile, locals held a sit-in protest condemning the incident and voiced removal of armed security persons from the residential area.

The rifleman involved in the incident is identified as one Heijang Khongsai, Rifleman Number 1299603, a resident of Khongsi Veng.
